Sweet, juicy, and tart enough to make your mouth water at the thought—plums are ripe and ready to eat now that the fullness of spring is cresting and summertime is rolling in. Stone-fruits—including plums, pluots, nectarines, apricots and peaches—become tantalizingly aromatic as they ripen. When that fragrance beckons, there’s no good reason to resist. Plums are a very good source of vitamin C and also contain dietary fiber, potassium, antioxidant phenols, and vitamins A, B2 and K. Plum varieties range in hue from bright or deep reds and profound purples to shades of pale green, yellow or glowing amber. There’s a range of flavor nuances among varieties of plums and their close relative, the pluot. Some taste thoroughly sweet, and others have brighter flavor or are sweet with distinctively tangy skin. Antioxidants are more concentrated near the skin, and a recent Austrian study suggests that the antioxidant content of fruit increases with ripeness.
So set out a bowl of ripe organic plums, and enjoy the summer aroma in your kitchen until each piece of refreshing and nutritious fruit disappears. You’ll be able to replenish your bowl with different varieties as they become available throughout the summer. Enjoy plums and pluots while you can—once they’re gone, it’s the pits! SA
Honeydew is delicate and sweet, and packed with vitamin C. It’s still early in the summertime, and organic melons will continue to be abundant for months. To prevent you from getting bored with honeydew plainly sliced, balled, or cubed—here are three easy ways to make your melons more interesting:
Zesty Fruit Salad: Toss cubed honeydew with grated ginger and lime juice.
Cool as a Cocktail: Juice (or blend & strain) honeydew and cucumber, add a squeeze of lime and organic vodka. Shake or blend with ice.
Summer Soup: Puree honeydew with fresh mint and lime juice, chill before serving.
